Maria Amelia Lopez, the ‘world’s oldest blogger’, has died aged 97. The Spanish great-grandmother was given a blog for her birthday by a “stingy” grandson and had been updating regularly ever since. She received, according to our news story, more than 1.5 million visitors but that isn’t the point. She said: “When I’m on the internet, I forget about my illness. The distraction is good for you - being able to communicate with people. It wakes up the brain, and gives you great strength.” It’s a good riposte to those who dismiss bloggers as self-indulgent time-wasters. For most, it’s a rewarding way to communicate and for some it’s a way to cope with a difficult time.
