As riots erupt in Athens over Greece’s debt issues, former Chancellor Lord Lawson tells Sky News the bankers who were “stupid enough” to lend money to Greece should be punished. Speaking on Jeff Randall Live, Lord Lawson who was Chancellor in Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet, said it is the bankers who lent money to Greece who are to blame, and that they should be penalised. “Bankers were stupid enough to lend them huge amounts, feeling there was no risks,” he said. “Those bankers should lose their jobs with no compensation if their bank goes bust - I hope that most banks won’t - but those that do because they made the wrong call should be treated very toughly indeed.” According to Lord Lawson, troubled Greece should never have been allowed to enter the European Union in the first place.
