The civilians are cut off from the Kurdistan Region and Kurdish Peshmerga forces who are trying to recapture the town from the IS militants.
They cannot risk descending the mountain as their Kurdish identity and Yezidi faith has made them a prime target for the extremist group.
The refugees say that the Islamic militants have massacred 300 villagers in the vicinities of Shingal since Saturday and that hundreds more missing.
Pictures of the killings have been posted on the Internet by the Islamic group where they also say they “want to control the entire province of Nineveh.”
The Islamic group is said to have captured 500 Yezidi women and girls and transported them to Mosul.
