The poll we publish today will make depressing reading for Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister. If it is an accurate reflection of the intentions of the British people, only 17 per cent of the electorate will cast their votes for Labour in next Thursday’s European elections: that would put the party in third place, behind the Liberal Democrats. More ominous still for Mr Brown – indeed, for all 350 Labour MPs in the House of Commons – only 22 per cent say they will vote Labour at the next general election. It makes the party more unpopular than it has ever been – even during the dark days of Michael Foot’s leadership.
