The idea that Europe can embark on an ill-judged emissions trading scheme without reference to the rest of the world is little more than economic suicide for what remains of European industry. One rarely agrees with French policy, but, on this, ‘Vieux Sarko’ is absolutely right. It is arrant madness. In a globalised world, industry will simply move, and millions will lose their livelihoods.
