“Make me a Muslim” heißt das neueste Reality-TV-Format, das gestern Abend zur besten Sendezeit Premiere hatte.
For an example of telly better left unmade, let me introduce you to Make Me a Muslim which, after last night’s brain-dead opener, continues tonight on Channel 4.
Its reality format asks six volunteers from whiter than white Harrogate to live under Islamic law for three weeks. It might as well have been designed to confirm everyone’s worst fears about one another. The white Brits include a porn user, a porn model, an effeminate gay hairdresser and a woman whose crucifix nestled deep within her cleavage. The Muslims were fundamentalist imams who poured champagne down sinks, banned premarital sex, tried to marry off the hairdresser and told the buxom Christian that the way she dressed encouraged rape.
The heathens found Sharia hard to live under. Of course, they did. You’d only try to if you believed in Islam and this programme made no attempt at conversion. Instead it announced that Britain was in a mess – “antisocial behaviour, binge drinking and promiscuity are rife” – and asked if Islam was the answer. This was like proposing that cutting off Eldon’s hands was the “answer” to his masturbation habit. If such a provision lurks within the Koran, I’m sure this scare-mongering, trivialising, nasty show will tell us.
