Dass man zur Bekämpfung der Erderwärmung Kühe töten soll, das wissen wir vom britischen Parlamentarier Boris Johnson (“If you want to be green - kill a cow”). Dass nun aber auch die Abholzung von Wäldern helfen kann, das ist neu. Die BBC News berichten:
Planting trees in snowy areas may worsen global warming as their canopies absorb sunlight which would otherwise be reflected by the snow, a study says. The report in US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences says the pine forests of Europe, Siberia and Canada may contribute to warming. Only tropical forests effectively cool the earth by absorbing carbon dioxide and creating clouds, the report says. ... Computer models produced by the report’s authors suggested deforestation in higher latitudes could reduce global warming.
Die Autoren der Studie waren über ihre Ergebnisse so irritiert, dass sie sofort klarstellten, dass sie nicht als als Anleitung zum Umweltschutz mit Axt und Motorsäge zu verstehen sei. Da haben die Wälder aber noch einmal Glück gehabt, dass sie dem Klimaschutz vorerst nicht weichen müssen.
