Scientists doubt that the supposed meteorite strike that sickened some 200 residents of Peru over the weekend actually involved anything from space.

Based on reports of fumes emanating from the crater, some scientists actually suspect that the event could have been some kind of geyser-like explosion rather than a meteorite impact.

“Statistically, it’s far more likely to have come from below than from above,” said Don Yeomans, head of the Near Earth Object Program at NASA’S Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

The noxious fumes that have supposedly sickened curious locals who went to examine the crater would seem to indicate hydrothermal activity, such as a local gas explosion, because “meteorites don’t give off odors,” Yeomans told SPACE.com.

Over the last few days, premature claims by government officials and speculations by scientists about an alleged “meteorite impact” in Peru have triggered fears and near mass hysteria among local residents who fear impending cosmic disaster and long-term health effects due to a “boiling” crater: “There is ‘a lot of panic and fear because villagers are afraid that other space objects could fall,’ Quispe told AFP.”

A Peruvian scientist was widely quoted - on dubious grounds - confirming that a cosmic impact had produced sulphurous gases that are claimed to be responsible for a mystery illness that has effected hundreds of local people:

Ich weiß nicht, warum dieses Zitat des libertären Nicolas Gómez Dávila die Rückseite des neuen Werkes von Harald Schmidt mit dem schönen Titel “Sex ist dem Jakobsweg sein Genitiv” ziert. Aber ich habe nichts dagegen. Im Gegenteil: ich hoffe, der Meister erzählt seinen Landsleuten in Zukunft mehr Dinge, die sie erst für absurd, und wenn es zu spät ist, für offenkundig halten.

Frau Zypries möchte die Ausbildung in einem Terrorlager in Pakistan oder anderswo unter der Bedingung unter Strafe stellen, dass diese Ausbildung auch in der Absicht absolviert wurde “eine terroristische Straftat zu begehen”. Da stellt sich natürlich die Frage, wie denn nun die Behörden diese Absicht einwandfrei ermitteln sollen. Was verbindet Kronstadt, Workuta, Berlin, Budapest und Prag? Es sind die niedergeschlagenen und mehr oder weniger vergessenen Aufstände gegen das
Kommunistische Regime. Workuta ist sogar als Name in der offiziellen Erinnerungslandschaft fast ausgelöscht. Dabei war der Streik der roten Sklaven 1953 in den Kohlegruben des Polargebietes der Anfang vom Ende des stalinistischen Lagersystems.Liegt es wirklich daran, dass Ereignisse in den Zentren der Welt von der Öffentlichkeit anders wahr genommen werden, als die an der Peripherie, wie sie der Polarkreis verkörpert ? Oder ist es doch der immer noch vorhandene Unwille zu erkennen, dass im vergangenen Jahrhundert der Lager und des Massenmordes zwei politische Experimente die Menschheit an den zivilisatorischen Abgrund gebracht haben?
