Der kranke Mann am Bosporus

Turkey’s government on Thursday warned the U.S. that a congressional bill recognizing the mass killings of Armenians during World War One as genocide could jeopardize relations between the two countries. In a statement, Turkey’s foreign ministry said the country’s government “resents and condemns this decision” and called the resolution an “irresponsible act” at an “extremely critical time.”

“Palestinians Crucify the Holy Land”

Christians are accordingly streaming out of Palestinian Authority-controlled areas – including some of the holiest sites in Christendom. Christians comprised 85 percent of the population of Bethlehem in 1948; by 2006 their numbers had dwindled to twelve percent, and a large mosque has been built on one side of Manger Square, right across from the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Muslim thugs beat a Christian cab driver in Bethlehem, George Rabie, just for displaying a crucifix in his cab. Rabie noted: “Every day, I experience discrimination….Many extremists from the villages are coming into Bethlehem.” Sometimes this discrimination turns lethal: several years ago, Muslims shot dead two Christian women for not wearing the Islamic veil. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades took responsibility and explained: “We wanted to clean the...

Der Grenzgänger

Veröffentlicht in Jüdische Allgemeine, Nr. 41/2007 (11. Oktober 2007), S. 3

Hätte Stevens so weitergemacht, dann würde...

The Historic Significance of Atlas Shrugged

October 10 is the 50th anniversary of the publication of Ayn Rand’s classic novel Atlas Shrugged, so in the coming week we can expect to see a flurry of articles about the novel—many of which will, unfortunately, offer highly inaccurate descriptions of its meaning and significance.

That’s a shame, because Atlas Shrugged is a novel that everyone ought to discover and grapple with, because it succeeds at something too few artists and intellectuals have had the courage to do.

The purpose of art and philosophy is to show us truths about human nature, about the nature of the world and our place in it. Philosophy names these truths explicitly, in literal terms; literature dramatizes these truths in concrete terms, revealing its insights through the actions and statements of the characters created by the novelist. A philosophical novel, like...

Wiesenthal Centre to Frankfurt Book Fair Director: “2007 Fair Opens as Homage to Catalonia in the Language of Holocaust Denial”

“The letter pointed to a catalogue of the Fair, entitled “Guest of Honour Frankfurt Book Fair 2007: Cultura Catalana Singular i Universal” which, “among its list of activities, presents the exhibit ‘NOU-NOW. Contemporary Catalan Photography’ showing at the Fotografie Forum Internationa. The photo selected to represent the exhibit in this catalogue (page 15, [1]) is ‘El Mur’ (The Wall) of Joan Fontcuberta, featuring an Arab man in ‘keffiyeh’ headscarf facing the separation barrier between Israel and the West Bank.”
The Centre clarified, “What makes this photo (3.25 ft x 5 ft in dimension) an unmitigated outrage is the substance of its caption: ‘The Wall in the Palestinian West Bank. The picture is a mosaic of...

Unendliche Energie, grenzenloser Fortschritt

Beam it down, Scotty.

A new federal study released yesterday concluded that continued increases in oil prices finally might make the generation of solar power in orbit economically competitive. The report urged the government to sponsor a demonstration of the technology to spur private investment in the concept.

The orbiting power plants would reduce the nation’s dependence on imported oil and help reduce the production of carbon dioxide that is contributing to global warming, according to the report led by the National Security Space Office, part of the Department of Defense.

“This is a solution for all mankind,” a former astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, now chairman of the spaceflight advocacy group ShareSpace Foundation, said. Mr. Aldrin joined with a group of other space advocacy organizations to unveil the report in Washington.

Since the...
