The real drivers of food and oil prices
The world is not “running out of food,” as some have glibly claimed, any more than it is running out of oil. There is certainly rising demand for food, but what the world doesn’t have is markets and trade systems capable of responding to that demand. The idea that there might be limits to global food production is just another formulation of the ancient belief that there is only room for so many people consuming so much resources. The world is running out of the open trade and free-market options that can cope with changing demand and supply patterns. One reason for rising food prices is rising energy prices, another commodity group that in recent years has come under aggressive government control around the world.
