Wie gewohnt: Noch eine Klimakonferenz, noch ein Flopp

Negotiators from the world’s most polluting countries have failed to agree on specific goals for cutting emissions of greenhouse gases. The French host of the meeting, Jean-Pierre Jouyet, says the 16 countries will hold two more meetings in May and June. They are working toward an agreement before a meeting in Japan in July. Jouyet says differences over medium-term emissions cuts “dominated” two days of climate talks that ended in Paris on Friday night. He says no quantitative goals were set and cited differences between the U.S. and EU positions. Participants have estimated it would cost $200 billion a year to fight the effects of climate change in coming years.

What used to be major environmental gatherings that would trigger global media hype and front-page headlines has turned into routine diplomatic meetings that wrap up, these days, on more or less the same note: Let’s meet again. Eight more such meetings are planned for the next 18 months to negotiate a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which runs out in 2012. Instead of the passionately celebrated “breakthroughs” that used to be the hallmark of international climate conferences, today they often end in deadlock and disappointment.
