Boris Johnson hat nicht nur die Londoner Bürgermeisterwahlen klar gewonnen. Er hat zugleich den von Ken Livingstone lautstark proklamierten ‘Volksentscheid’ zum Thema Klimawandel eindeutig für sich entschieden.

Livingstone hatte vor einer Woche offiziell die Wahlen zum Plebiszit über die Klimapolitik erklärt: Ken Livingstone sought to turn the mayoral race into a “green election” today as he unveiled his environmental policies for a third term. Mr Livingstone made clear he views 1 May as a referendum on his policies to tackle climate change and protect the health of Londoners. Aides claimed it would be the first election in British history to be decided largely on environmental issues.

Red Ken und die Grünen gingen denn auch als politische Bündnisparter in die Wahlen und attackierten mit aller Härte Boris Johnsons bekannte Kritik an der allgemeinen Klimahysterie.

Die rot-grüne Strategie und Kens Klimaplebiszit sind voll daneben gegangen. Boris, seit Jahren ein Mitglied meines wissenschaftspolitischen Netzwerks CCNet, hat die Wahlen (und damit den vermeintlichen Volksentscheid) haushoch für sich entschieden. Was er von den roten und grünen Klimafundamentalisten wirklich hält, hat Johnson letztes Jahr in einem lesenswerten Artikel deutlich gemacht:

They want the religion. They want the sweet moralistic feeling of telling someone to stop doing something. They want to be able to rage about Chelsea Tractors and Tony Blair’s flights, and they want to give vent to their feelings of disgust at the whole triumph of Western consumerist capitalism; and what worries me is that, in the end, the moralising mumbo-jumbo becomes more important than the scientific reality. We should cease our pagan yammering for sacrifice, and look at what the science really demands. It is a sign of our terrifying ignorance that so many would still prefer to plant a heat-producing tree than see the wisdom of the ancients, and kill a flatulent cow.
