Neues Klimaabkommen immer unwahrscheinlicher

Reaching an timely agreement on setting up an effective global climate protection system will be “very difficult”, a senior UN official said on Wednesday ahead of the Budapest session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).  Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), said that in view of the current global economic trends, it will be “very very difficult” to reach an agreement.  He warned that if the economy of China and India continues to grow at a similar pace and their greenhouse gas emission increases proportionately, mankind will be unable to prevent the critical level of warming. IPCC Chairman Rajendra Pachauri told a press conference that the current state of international talks on climate change gave cause for pessimism. But one sign of hope lay in growing worldwide awareness of the dangers inherent in global warming, he added.
