Congratulations, Europe!
The EU selection follows the path of another brainless choice for the Nobel Peace Prize – Barack Obama in 2009, when he had not done a thing except give lofty speeches and apologia for the United States’ role in the world. The two recipients have this in common. Obama described himself as “a citizen of the world” and proclaimed the virtues of “global citizenship” to adoring crowds in Berlin in 2007. The Nobel Committee liked what it heard and awarded Obama the peace prize for his potential to elevate transnationalism over American national sovereignty. He has not disappointed. The EU is all about supranational authority as a counterweight to nationalism. The Nobel Committee apparently believes that the tradeoff is worth it on the theory that the EU has brought peace, democracy and human rights to Europe. The committee has ignored a few “inconvenient truths,” to borrow a phrase from another undeserving recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, Al Gore. http://frontpagemag.com/2012/joseph-klein/the-european-unions-undeserved-peace-prize/?utm_source=FrontPage+Magazine&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=d286648825-Mailchimp_FrontPageMag
To be sure, Europe had its share of forward-looking leaders after World War II. But Western Europe would not have had the space, time and resources to stand on its own and create the Coal and Steel Community, and then the European Community and then the EU were it not for America’s willingness to protect it from the Soviet army. After the briefest of flirtations with abandoning Europe, the U.S. decided to stick around and stick it out, rescuing Berlin from Stalin’s blockade, opening spigots of aid and trade, forging NATO, holding back the Iron Curtain, mentoring Europe in the ways of pluralism and providing a security umbrella that allowed Germans and Italians, Danes and Dutch, Belgians and French, to develop a European identity. http://frontpagemag.com/2012/alan-w-dowd/another-peace-prize-surprise/?utm_source=FrontPage+Magazine&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5cc7ec50b2-Mailchimp_FrontPageMag
