Most leading climate experts don’t agree with Henrik Svensmark, the 49-year-old director of the Center for Sun-Climate Research at the Danish National Space Center in Copenhagen. In fact, he has taken a lot of blows for proposing that solar activity and cosmic rays are instrumental in determining the warming (and cooling) of Earth. His studies show that cosmic rays trigger cloud formation, suggesting that a high level of solar activity—which suppresses the flow of cosmic rays striking the atmosphere—could result in fewer clouds and a warmer planet. This, Svensmark contends, could account for most of the warming during the last century. Does this mean that carbon dioxide is less important than we’ve been led to believe? Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine von den europäischen Airlineverbänden vorgestellte Untersuchung der Beratungsfirma Ernst & Young. Die deutschen Fluggesellschaften sehen mit Sorge, dass der Emissionshandel in seiner jetzigen Planung weit in das Geschäft der Fluggesellschaften eingreifen soll.

The Hamas victory in Gaza is a warning that World War IV (as Norman Podhoretz has called it) is going to be long and hard. It is also a warning that the West is currently losing that war.

These defeats are not a function of the courage and will of the American people. In a June poll sponsored by American Solutions, 85 percent of the American people said it was important to defend America and its allies. Only 10 percent were opposed. On an even stronger question, 75 percent said it was important to defeat America’s enemies. Only 16 percent disagreed.

So the hard left in America is only 16 percent. It is outnumbered almost 5-1 by those who would defeat our enemies.

Unless Fatah gets its act together, it will eventually be defeated in the West Bank as it was in Gaza. The international aid that is going to Salaam Fayad’s government is actually going to the ailing Fatah faction. The money will buy Fatah some calm for the short term, because the majority of the Palestinian civil servants haven’t received full salaries for the past 18 months. But in the long term, Fatah needs to do much more than pay salaries. It needs to get rid of all its corrupt leaders and the armed thugs on the streets. In short, it needs to offer the Palestinians a better alternative to Hamas.
