I’ve been meaning to reply to this Andrew Gelman post in which he points out that “the right” used to be against material progress while “the left” was for it, but

Nowadays, the debates usually go in the other directions, with people on the left being less positive about material progress and people on the right saying that things are great now and are getting better.

Andrew kindly points to my skeptical take on those who use happiness research to argue that consumer capitalism is making us miserable, and continues:

Auch schmunzeln musste ich, als ich gestern die Dienstagsausgabe des Kölner Express in die Hände bekam, mit Yusuf Islam u.a. auf dem Titelblatt.

Für einen Tag hob man beim Express Wolfgang Niedecken in den Chefredakteurssessel, der lud dann unter dem Motto “Arsch huh für eine bessere Welt” 10 Prominente ein, über den Kampf gegen die Plagen dieser Welt zu schreiben und sich was Schönes zu wünschen für die Zukunft.

So kam es dazu, das Yusuf Islam, der Frauen grundsätzlich nicht die Hand gibt und Rushdie den Tod wünscht, auf der gleichen Seite über Frieden reden darf, auf der Ex-Kaiserin Farah die Gleichberechtigung von Mann und Frau anmahnt.

Yusuf Islam alias Cat Stevens wird am Samstag beim Live-Earth-Konzert in Hamburg auftreten. Er werde als letzter Künstler auf der Veranstaltung gegen 23.00 Uhr singen, teilte ein Live-Earth-Sprecher am Dienstag mit. In Hamburg beteiligen sich rund 20 Musiker und Bands an Live Earth. Es sind unter anderen Shakira, Mando Diao, Snoop Dogg, Chris Cornell und Katie Melua. Noch ist die Veranstaltung, die um 14.00 Uhr in der HSH Nordbank Arena am Volkspark beginnt, nicht ausverkauft. Erst knapp die Hälfte der Tickets konnten an Interessierte verkauft werden.

The public believes the effects of global warming on the climate are not as bad as politicians and scientists claim, a poll has suggested. The Ipsos Mori poll of 2,032 adults - interviewed between 14 and 20 June - found 56% believed scientists were still questioning climate change.

There was a feeling the problem was exaggerated to make money, it found.

The Royal Society said most climate scientists believed humans were having an “unprecedented” effect on climate.

The survey suggested that terrorism, graffiti, crime and dog mess were all of more concern than climate change.

Ipsos Mori’s head of environmental research, Phil Downing, said the research showed there was “still a lot to do” in encouraging “low-carbon lifestyles”.

The presidents of Iran and Venezuela launched construction of a joint petrochemical plant on Monday, strengthening an “axis of unity” between two oil-rich nations staunchly opposed to the United States.

Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Iran’s Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who both often rail against Washington, also signed a series of other deals to expand economic cooperation, ranging from setting up a dairy factory in Venezuela to forming an oil company.
